Movie star Charlize Theron has shared her hope for every young person around the world.
Charlize Theron wants safety for “every young person” around the world.
The 51-year-old actress adopted Jackson, 14, in 2012, and August, 12, in 2015, and Charlize admits that her own experience of motherhood has reaffirmed her desire to help all children.
The Oscar-winning star told People: “I think my interest in working with young people — and especially young girls — that’s kind of been part of my life before I had kids.
“And I think once my kids leave [the house], [it] will still be part of what I find is important, you know? When you have two young girls … when they live in privilege, if anything, it makes me realise that I want safety for every young person.”
Charlize feels fortunate that her kids “can flourish” and succeed in life, and she wants other children to have similar opportunities.
The Hollywood star said: “I see that my kids are safe and they have a safe space and they can flourish and they can succeed, not just survive. And I want that for young people.”
Meanwhile, Charlize previously explained that adoption was “always [her] first choice”.
The actress also stressed that she’s never distinguished between “raising an adopted child versus [her] own biological child”.
Charlize – who is involved in women’s rights organisations and has marched in pro-choice rallies – told ELLE magazine: “When I first filed [for adoption], my mom showed me a letter I’d written when I was little; I asked if we could go to the orphanage.
“In South Africa, orphanages were everywhere, and I wanted a brother or sister. I was always aware that there are so many children in this world who don’t have families.
“Adoption is a very personal thing — I know people whom I love dearly who don’t feel that they could raise another child as their own. I respect that.
“But for me — and I can’t be the only person out there — I never saw a difference in raising an adopted child versus my own biological child. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on something. This was always my first choice, even when I was in a relationship.”
