Teri Hatcher has warned her fans not to send any money to someone impersonating her online.
The Desperate Housewives star is due to be taking over from Vanessa Williams playing Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical in London, and has temporarily relocated to the capital while in the show.
Teri has long been a frequent social media user, and regularly shares messages and pictures with fans online, but her latest had a darker turn, after Teri was informed of a troll trying to swindle her fans.
Teri shared a screenshot of the message doing the rounds on her Instagram page, and wrote in the caption: “Someone is impersonating me and emailing people asking for money to attend an event surrounding The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical in London, as seen in the screenshot. @pradawestend.
“This is NOT me, and there is no such event. I would never ask for money or personal information, including a copy of your passport.
“Please do not send money or share your information. Stay safe!”
She added on the picture: ”I want to make it clear that 1) I would NEVER ask you for money 20 I would NEVER ask for your personal information (like a copy of your passport) and finally, there is no such event.
“Please do not pay this person, this is a scam.”
Teri later returned to the comments section to update her followers, as she wrote: “I AM JUST SO SORRY ABOUT THIS. I DONT KNOW WHY PEOPLE DO THINGS LIKE THIS.
“I APPRECIATE YOUR PATIENCE AS WE TRY TO SORT THIS OUT. BUT THIS IS NOT ME! #SCAMALERT.”
Teri’s fans also had their say, with one warning her: “I think the same person is doing it on Twitter (I am not sure if you are in there, too), but I have an account with your name saying to write DMs for meet and greets.”
Another added: “Some people are just crummy people. I’m sorry this happened to you. Sending you best wishes for your show! I wish I could see it because I know you’ll be amazing!”
While a third admitted: “They got my personal details but luckily I realised it was a scam and they didn’t get my bank details. But it was a shock and scary.
“Massive fan of yours and this person got me to believe after I’d watched Devils Wears Prada there would be a meet and greet.”
Teri’s debut appearance as Miranda in the musical will take place on October 20, and she’ll be in the role until February 6 next year.
