Bryce Dallas Howard’s Jurassic World co-star convinced her to join social media

Bryce Dallas Howard has discussed the circumstances around her joining social media.

The 45-year-old actress starred alongside Chris, 47, in Jurassic World, the 2015 action sci-fi movie, and Bryce remembers her co-star telling her that it was “time” to join social media.

Bryce – who appeared in Nosedive, an episode of Black Mirror, in 2016 – told People: “It was very helpful [in preparing for the Black Mirror role] because I remember having a little bit of … I was like, ‘What do I put as my descriptor for who I am? Who am I?’

“It leads you down a bit of an existential rabbit hole. And it all comes down to, how healthy is it for us to be aware of being perceived?

“You know, like spotlight syndrome, where we all think everybody is looking at us. Well, social media did kind of shift that, because people sort of are [looking].”

In Nosedive, people are able to rate each other from one to five stars, using their smartphones, for every interaction they have.

The episode helped Bryce to start a dialogue with her children about social media.

The actress – who has Theodore, 19, and Beatrice, 14, with her husband Seth Gabel – said: “I felt like I had a really amazing advantage as a parent.

“My kids are 19 and 14, and before there was any conversation about social media, I was like, ‘Mommy has something to show you.’ So the episode did a lot of the work for me.”

Bryce praised Charlie Brooker, the co-showrunner of Black Mirror, for his writing talents, describing him as a “futurist”.

The Hollywood star – who is the eldest child of the filmmaker Ron Howard – said: “Charlie Brooker is a futurist, and he is thinking about what is potentially ahead. And stories are really good at prepping us collectively, getting us thinking about things, so that when the time comes, we can make a choice that hopefully leads to thriving.”
