Alan Cumming ‘doesn’t understand’ Avengers: Doomsday

Actor Alan Cumming has confessed he “doesn’t understand” the plot to his new superhero film Avengers: Doomsday and he is just on set to “run around”.

The 61-year-old actor has reprised his role as X-Men mutant mutant Nightcrawler in the new blockbuster, but he wasn’t allowed to read the full script before filming started and many of his scenes will be based around CGI so he’s been left totally baffled and is convinced he’s just there to “run around”.

During an interview on SiriusXM, Alan explained: “To be honest, I don’t fully understand the plot …

“There was a bit when we were shooting a scene, and it was one of the rare scenes when I was actually on the backlot and not in front of a blue screen.

“And this man came and said: ‘So right now Alan, these giant robots are blah blah,’ and started to tell me the thing, and I was like: ‘You know what, thank you so much, but just tell me where I point my, whatever I point. And I’ll do that. Really, I just know I’m here to run around’.”

Alan went on to reveal he saw his Avengers: Doomsday co-star Florence Pugh – who plays Yelena Belova / Black Widow – at an awards show recently and it marked the first time they had met despite sharing scenes together in the new movie.

Alan explained: “I saw Florence Pugh yesterday at the Emmys. And I said: ‘Gosh, it’s so funny. I’ve never met you, but you lay on top of me, or your body double did.’

“And she goes: ‘Yeah I lay on top of you as well, but it was your body double’.”

Alan previously admitted he was thrilled to reprise his role as blue-skinned Nightcrawler after a 23-year absence – especially as advanced in movie make-up techniques mean he no longer has to spend four and a half hours a day having his skin painted.

During an appearance on Today With Jenna and Friends, he said: “Isn’t it nuts? I’m excited and amazed. It’s been 23 years since I was a superhero.

“I’ve had some make-up tests already for the role, but what’s great about it was that before it was about four and a half hours to apply it, but now it’s only 90 minutes …

“Before, all of the tattoos were done by hand. They hadn’t decided on them before we started filming. Now, they just stick onto my face. It’s a game changer. I’m going back to being a 60-year-old superhero, and everyone seems really lovely.”
