Former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson has opened up about the “stressful” and “uncomfortable” side of being a dad to his 10-year-old son Freddie admitting he doesn’t like to mix his life as a singer with his other role as a parent.
Louis Tomlinson has opened up about the “stressful” and “uncomfortable” side of being a dad.
The former One Direction star became a first-time father in 2016 when his ex Briana Jungwirth gave birth to Freddie, now 10, and he now tries to spend as much time with him as possible even though the pop star is based in the UK and his son is in the US – and Louis has now admitted he doesn’t like to mix his life as a singer with his other role as a parent.
During a conversation with Jack Chochrane for the Finding Joy In Short Moments podcast, Louis explained: “Being a dad is incredibly rewarding, but it’s also challenging.
“On my recent American run of shows, my son Freddie came to two shows. I normally do a really good job of splitting myself down the middle – me as dad, and me at work as a singer.
“When those two worlds meet, I find it incredibly stressful because all I want to do is give all of my time to Freddie, but the mental game to stand up on stage is also quite consuming.”
He went on to add he rarely talks to his son about his life as a pop star, adding: “Me and my son almost pretend that I don’t do this job – we live our lives as normally as we possibly can.
“When home and work collide, it’s a bit uncomfortable as, truthfully, all I want to do is spend my time with him.”
Louis went on to discuss his career and he admitted he tries not to compare himself to his former One Direction bandmates.
He added: “It can be tough for me. Sometimes I might not think I am good enough to be on the stage. But I never leave the stage with that feeling.”
Louis’ comments about Freddie come after he previously admitted that whenever he’s in the US, he tries to be a full-time dad to his son.
He told Louis told The Independent newspaper: “I’m pretty much playing full-time dad when I’m out there. I don’t do loads of work or even [much] socialising … “[Freddie is] good as gold.”
The 34-year-old singer added of school runs: “I’m still the youngest dad there. It kills me in the mornings though … I’ve never been great at early starts.”
