Simu Liu was “overwhelmed with emotion” when he stood next to Allison Hsu for the first time at their wedding.
Simu Liu was “overwhelmed with emotion” at his wedding to Allison Hsu.
The Avengers: Doomsday actor married the digital marketing boss at Château d’Estoublon in Provence, France, earlier this month after four years together, and the couple have opened up about their “perfect” wedding day.
Simu, 37, told Vogue magazine: “I couldn’t stop thinking about how perfect everything was.
“Our friends and guests looked absolutely beautiful, and then the moment Allison stood at the top of the aisle, I was overwhelmed with emotion looking at my life partner.”
A particularly magical moment for the groom was seeing the sky clear after a day of on-and-off rain, which he believed was a sign from his late grandparents.
Simu said: “The rainfall just before our ceremony was the most convinced I have ever been that something greater exists beyond our comprehension.
“I had been thinking a lot about my grandparents, who passed from COVID in 2021. Yeye and Nainai raised me until I was four and a half years old in China, and I have always felt deeply connected to them.
“Just before the ceremony began, it drizzled as my parents took their seats. It seemed so coincidental, the timing and the gentle droplets, as if someone was sending reassurance that they were watching.
“Even as I think back to this moment, it defies my sense of rationality and logic. A part of me believes they were with us. I hadn’t originally written them into my vows, but I felt compelled to tell Allison that I believed Yeye and Nainai would have loved meeting her.”
Woody Harrelson gave a reading of Rev. Daniel Harris’ Blessing of the Hands during the evening ceremony, which was officiated by the couple’s mutual friend Jason Y. Lee. Allison’s brother, Joshua, gave another reading and Renee Rapp performed Etta James’ At Last for the couple’s first dance.
Allison said: “Looking back, we’re just so overwhelmed with gratitude…
“We continue to be moved by the amount of time, energy, and coordination that our destination wedding required of everyone involved. And we just feel unbelievably lucky as we continue to reflect on the weekend’s celebrations and every precious memory it created.”
Allison honoured her heritage by wearing a dress from Taiwanese label Nicole + Felicia, while Simu opted for the Asian-Canadian label Garrison Bespoke for his outfit, along with one of his favourite Versace jackets.
The bride said: “To be able to wear a design from a powerhouse Taiwanese sister duo on my wedding day felt like the perfect way to honour my family. My parents and my own sister were moved when I shared the story of this dress with them.”
She changed into a customised version of Danielle Frankel’s Lua dress for the reception and opted for hand-beaded mini dresses by Rosie Etienne and Galia Lahav for the afterparty.
She said: “I knew from the very start that I wanted to end our wedding night in shimmery, sparkling brilliance.
“The intricate beadwork was done so masterfully on each dress. Finding and trying on these killer party dresses with Rosie and Galia each was one of my favourite parts of the wedding process.”
