Sir Paul McCartney says wife Nancy Shevell is convinced the late Queen Elizabeth “fancied” him, after he admitted the royal was “a babe”.
Sir Paul McCartney’s wife believes the late Queen Elizabeth “fancied” her husband.
The Beatles legend – who was knighted by the beloved royal in 1997 and closed her Diamond Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace – has previously said Elizabeth was “a babe”, and now claims Nancy Shevell always felt the queen had a soft spot for him.
Asked on Good Hang with Amy Poehlr: “Did you meet someone who, you wanted their autograph, or you were blown away [because] you knew that they were a famous person?”
The Her Majesty hitmaker – who wrote the 1969 song as a joke love letter to the monarch – instantly replied: “The Queen.”
Amy laughed: “And that’s an autograph you’re not going to get.”
Paul said: “She’s great. I love the queen.”
The 84-year-old music icon went on to gush over Elizabeth – who was 96 when she died in 2022 – and admitted he and his bandmates “liked her in ways we shouldn’t have liked her”.
He said: “She was a babe.
“We all used to think, ‘Wow, this is amazing.’ You know, like, having a king, he’s got this girl. This babe. So, we kind of liked her in other ways than we shouldn’t have liked her.
“So meeting her was special.”
The Yesterday hitmaker then revealed wife Nancy is under the impression that Elizabeth had an eye for her husband – and he is inclined to believe her.
He went on: “Nancy, my wife now, she says, ‘She fancied you.’ Now, there’s no knowing if there’s any truth to that.”
Amy laughed: “Let’s say it’s true.”
Paul said: “I like to think it’s true.”
Macca previously said he thought Her Majesty “was a good-looking woman” when the Liverpool band received their MBEs from her in 1965.
Gayle asked: “Like a babe?”, to which he responded: “Yeah, just like a babe.
“We were preteen boys in Liverpool.
“She looked like a film star to us.”
As working class boys from Liverpool, the Let it Be hitmakers never thought it would be possible to meet the queen – let alone be awarded an MBE.
He added: “No, you see we were just working class boys and she’s the Queen, so there’s an ocean or two between us
“So I never thought we would until we became The Beatles and we got rather famous.
“You’re told not to shake her hand, you call her ‘ma’am’ not ‘your majesty’ and you know if she stops on the line and talks to you, talk to her, otherwise shut up.”
