Sir Cliff Richard celebrates 86th birthday in flamboyant style with fans

The veteran entertainer marked his milestone with an exclusive London gathering, giving fans a preview of his forthcoming covers album while continuing his decades-long calendar tradition with a personal tribute to his late friend.

Sir Cliff Richard celebrated his 86th birthday with an afternoon tea party at a luxury London hotel, raising a glass with friends and fans as he marked the occasion with cake, new music and a flamboyant outfit.

The veteran singer, whose hits include Summer Holiday, The Young Ones and We Don’t Talk Anymore, turned 86 on Wednesday (14.10.26) and it has now emerged he celebrated at the InterContinental London Park Lane hotel. Photographs shared on his Instagram account on Thursday (15.10.26) showed Cliff wearing a striking snakeskin-print jacket while enjoying birthday cake and a glass of wine.

The celebrations also coincided with the promotion of his forthcoming album, Only Number Ones, featuring his interpretations of chart-topping songs.

Alongside the photographs, Cliff wrote: “Thank you for all my amazing and thoughtful birthday wishes. I had a lovely day and celebrated with friends (and cake!)”

The pictures also showed the singer smiling as he raised his glass, blew out candles on a frosted birthday cake and cut himself a slice.

Cliff treated a select audience to previews of tracks from his new album, which draws on songs that have reached number one in the charts.

He added: “I am so thrilled to have been able to celebrate my 86th birthday with my fans. They have always been very special to me and are the reason why I continue to make music and tour.

“They helped me all of these years to get to number one and it is great that I am now able to give back with my own versions of number one tracks that I personally love.”

Cliff’s new album adds to a recording career spanning almost seven decades, during which the crooner has become one of Britain’s most commercially successful recording artists.

His breakthrough came with Move It in 1958, followed by a succession of hits including Living Doll, Travellin’ Light, Congratulations, Devil Woman and Mistletoe and Wine.

He also established a film career, appearing in the musicals The Young Ones and Summer Holiday, and became closely associated with his backing group, the Shadows.

Cliff has continued recording and performing into his eighties, maintaining a devoted following through concerts, albums and his long-running annual calendar.

The singer’s latest album, his 48th studio collection, is scheduled for release on 27 November through Warner Music and features new recordings of 12 chart-topping songs spanning eight decades.

Among the tracks are Sign of the Times, originally recorded by Harry Styles, 32, Oh, Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison, My Sweet Lord by George Harrison and Return to Sender by Elvis Presley.

The album also includes White Christmas, Spirit in the Sky and I’m a Believer, while a deluxe edition features 14 of Cliff’s own UK number one singles.

The birthday event, hosted by broadcaster Ken Bruce, 75, was attended by fans who had pre-ordered the album and secured tickets to the exclusive celebration.

The celebrations follow the unveiling of Cliff’s 2027 calendar, which includes a tribute to his late friend Cilla Black, who died aged 72 in 2015.

The pair maintained a friendship spanning more than 50 years and spent time together in Barbados, where they both owned holiday homes.

One photograph in the calendar shows Cliff wearing a tie-dye jacket and shorts while standing aboard a boat named Cilla.

The cover depicts him on a postage stamp in front of a cruise ship, while another photograph shows him reclining on a cream sofa holding a copy of his first autobiography, It’s Great To Be Young, published in 1960.

Cliff has produced annual calendars since 1979, with the range becoming a lucrative part of his merchandising business.

According to Calendar Club, his 2022 calendar outsold those of other music stars, including Harry Styles.

In 2023, the singer announced he would no longer pose shirtless for future editions, ending a longstanding feature of the calendars.

His official website is currently advertising several versions of the 2027 collection, including a collector’s edition and a slim calendar, alongside the forthcoming album.
