‘Fork in the road’ moment inspired Josh Brolin to get sober

Avengers: Endgame actor Josh Brolin had a “fork in the road” moment which inspired him to quit drinking and get a sober, something he has been able to maintain for the past 12 years.

Josh Brolin made the decision to quit drinking when he “woke up on the sidewalk” outside his house and realised he had reached a “fork in the road” moment.

The 58-year-old actor decided to tackle his alcohol problem after waking in a stupor outside his own home “yet again” and coming to the conclusion that his lifestyle had to change.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph newspaper, he said: “Drinking got boring in the end. I woke up on the sidewalk outside my house, yet again, and it felt like a fork in the road. Which way was I going to go for the rest of my life?”

The Whalefall star previously entered rehab for substance abuse in 2013 after he got involved in several public altercations in which he appeared to be intoxicated.

Earlier that year, he split from his ex-wife, actress Diane Lane, after eight years of marriage.

Brolin has now been sober for 12 years and is an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

The Avengers: Endgame star begins every day with an AA meeting on Zoom to inspire him to stay on his teetotal journey.

He said: “Twelve years, and I do a meeting every morning at 6am on Zoom.”

Brolin – who is now married to Kathryn Boyd Brolin, with whom he has two daughters – says life is better than ever sober and he has “way more fun”.

He said: “I love being sober. I’m having way more fun now than I ever did drinking, and I never end up in jail, which is a real bonus.”

Brolin – who also has an older son and daughter with his ex-wife Alice Adair – also admitted he had experimented with drugs, including heroin.

He shared: “I got strung out on heroin a few times, but I was never a full-blown junkie.”

Brolin previously admitted that he was on a “destructive path” amid his drinking woes.

The Deadpool 2 star recognised that he needed to “change and mature” when his mother became unwell.

Brolin – who first found fame as a child actor when he starred in iconic adventure movie The Goonies – told The Guardian newspaper: “It was another turning point.

“It made me think of a lot of things. My mom dying when I was in my 20s. All the impact that had on me that I hadn’t moved past; I was always such a mama’s boy. But I realised that I was on a destructive path. I knew that I had to change and mature. It was like I stepped back and saw the hamster wheel.”
