Olivia Colman and Ed Sinclair have been married since August 2001.
Olivia Colman has revealed the secret to her long marriage to Ed Sinclair.
The couple tied the knot in August 2001 after meeting at Cambridge University in the 1990s while working on a production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Table Manners at the Cambridge Footlights, a student sketch comedy society.
In an interview to promote her and Alexander Skarsgard’s new film Wicker, TikTok couple Benedict and Hannah Townsend, who have been married for four years, asked Olivia, 52, how they can make it to 25 years like her and producer Ed.
She said: “Be kind to each other, and we’ve learned over the years to try not to let things… oh hang on, I heard one person who had been married about 50 years say, ‘Sometimes it’s the things you don’t say.’
“Which was very wise, but not everyone will agree with that, so wait for the right moment to bring it up in a nice way.”
The Crown star noted she and Ed never argue.
Olivia added: “I’m not a conflict person, nor is my husband, but we’ve learned over the years to definitely try and talk about, you know, ‘That thing on Tuesday, can we talk about that?’ in a calm way and then it works well.”
She continued: “Find a nice gentle time to say, ‘Can we talk about that thing?’ And often it’s, ‘What thing?’ Neither of us has noticed.
“But if one of us has been upset by it, then we’ll talk it through.
“For some people, it works in the heat of the moment; it doesn’t work for me.”
Olivia’s marriage advice comes months after admitting to feeling as though she is non-binary and having “always described myself to my husband as a gay man”.
Non-binary is a term people use to describe someone’s gender identity that does not fall in the traditional categories of male or female.
In February, the entertainer, who stars in the queer film Jimpa, told Them: “Throughout my whole life, I’ve had arguments with people where I’ve always sort of felt non-binary.
“I’ve never felt massively feminine in my being female. I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man. And he goes, ‘Yeah, I get that’. And I do feel so at home and at ease.”
The Oscar winner continued: “I don’t really spend a whole lot of time with people who are very staunchly heterosexual… The men I know and love are very in touch with all sides of themselves.
“I think with my husband and I, we take turns to be the ‘strong one’, or the one who needs a little bit of gentleness. I believe everyone has all of it in them. I’ve always felt like that.
“I’m not alone in saying, ‘I don’t feel like it’s binary’. And I loved that. I came away from making this film with, yeah, I knew I wasn’t alone.”
Olivia and Ed are parents to sons Hall, 18, and Finn, 20, and a 10-year-old daughter, whose name has never been revealed publicly.
