TikTok has agreed to permanently withdraw its TikTok Lite rewards programme from the EU to comply with the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA).

The social media app’s scheme allows users to earn points while performing certain tasks such as liking content, watching videos or inviting friends to join, but the European Union had demanded an immediate risk assessment in April, shortly after it was launched in France and Spain because of concerns about its potential impact on mental health.
The bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA) requires large online platforms to report potential risks of new functionalities before they are launched and to adopt measures to address these risks.
And now, the EU’s executive branch have announced TikTok have made legally-binding commitments to withdraw the rewards programme and not to launch any other schemes to circumvent the decision.
They noted: “Any breach of the commitments would immediately amount to a breach of the DSA and could therefore lead to fines.”
Another EU investigation – which opened in February – is still ongoing to examine whether TikTok breached online content rules aimed at protecting children and ensuring transparent advertising.
