Royal Mail trials postbox with solar panel and barcode scanner

Royal Mail has unveiled a solar-powered postbox with a barcode scanner so users can send larger parcels.

Royal Mail has unveiled a solar-powered post box with a barcode scanner with a hatch to accept parcels larger than letterbox size.

The post box’s new large hatch offers a new way for the postal service to generate extra revenue with second hand selling on a rise and people using sites such as Vinted to make extra cash and sell their goods.

Consumers will be able to send parcels from these post boxes that have a barcode. They can then scan their code and the solar-panel based battery will allow the drawer to open and using the Royal Mail app, they can track the parcel.

The Royal Mail’s chief executive, Emma Gilthorpe, said in a statement: “In an era where letter volumes continue to decline and parcels are booming, we are giving our iconic postboxes a new lease of life on street corners across the nation.”

The trial is currently taking place in the Ware, Hertford and Fowlmere areas of Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
