Sony is reportedly developing a $400 PlayStation 6 portable with a Nintendo Switch-style hybrid design.
Sony is reportedly working on a new Nintendo Switch-style handheld console that could launch alongside the PlayStation 6.
According to leaker Moore’s Law is Dead, the upcoming device will function as both a portable and home console, allowing players to dock it for TV play while also supporting on-the-go gaming.
It has been claimed that the system could cost around $400 and may be more powerful than Microsoft’s Asus ROG Ally X, a handheld gaming PC.
The rumours suggest Sony is positioning the supposed device as a full-fledged PS6 companion rather than a streaming-only device like the PlayStation Portal.
Unlike the Portal, which requires a constant connection to a PS5, this new handheld is reportedly being designed to run games natively, potentially including next-generation PS6 titles.
Sony has not confirmed the device, but speculation points to the company preparing to challenge Nintendo in the hybrid console market while offering something more powerful.
It’s also been reported that the system could use custom AMD hardware, though details remain scarce.
Sources have suggested that Sony is still experimenting with prototypes, and the final design and specifications may change before launch.
The timing of the leaks comes as Sony faces scrutiny over its live-service strategy, with recent setbacks including the failure of Concord.
A successful handheld could broaden its hardware offering and re-establish a foothold in portable gaming.
For now, the project remains unconfirmed. But if Sony is indeed developing a Nintendo Switch-style PlayStation 6 portable, it would mark the company’s major return to the handheld market since the PlayStation Vita in 2011.
