Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag ‘remake is more RPG-focused and will cut some of the story’

The supposed Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake will reportedly feature heavier RPG mechanics and may cut modern-day story elements.

The supposed Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake will reportedly lean harder into RPG mechanics, while cutting out or reducing certain story elements.

According to Jeux Video Magazine, Ubisoft’s apparent remake of its 2013 action-adventure title will amplify Edward Kenway’s pirate life, with more RPG-style gameplay similar to Assassin’s Creed: Origins and Shadows.

The outlet claimed that the modern-day storyline may be removed entirely, with the narrative focus shifting almost exclusively to Kenway’s adventures at sea.

The report also notes that the game’s release is tentatively slated for early 2026, though that date has not been confirmed.

If this claim is true, these changes would mark a significant shift from the original Black Flag, which balanced swashbuckling pirate life with the meta-narrative of Assassin’s Creed.

Jeux Video Magazine’s report is the latest in a long line of claims and hints that Ubisoft is working on modernising Black Flag.

In July, the studio added brand-new features to the game’s Steam page, including custom volume controls, stereo sound, surround sound, mouse-only option, adjustable difficulty options, and the ability to save anytime.

A month prior to that, Ubisoft had updated some of Black Flag’s trailers on Valve’s site.

Meanwhile, Edward Kenway voice actor Matt Ryan teased fans at a convention that they would “have to beat” Black Flag again, hinting at a possible remake.
