RGG unveils new Virtua Fighter Project with gameplay and battle system revealed

RGG Studios has unveiled the New Virtua Fighter Project at Tokyo Game Show, showcasing new battle rules and innovative combat systems that aim to evolve the franchise’s legacy of precision fighting.

RGG Studios has revealed fresh details about the New Virtua Fighter Project, debuting the first look at its battle rules and gameplay systems during the Tokyo Game Show.

The new entry in Sega’s long-running fighting series introduces two distinct match formats.

Standard mode keeps to tradition, with victory earned by either depleting an opponent’s health or forcing a ring-out, and matches decided over three rounds.

Uprising mode, however, is an all-new rule set designed to create momentum-shifting opportunities, bringing a dynamic edge to every fight.

To complement these systems, RGG is introducing three groundbreaking mechanics.

Break and Rush tracks accumulated damage in specific body regions, eventually allowing for targeted break attacks that carry a ‘broken’ status across rounds, adding long-term strategy to matches.

Stunner and Stun Combo builds on that intensity with a new strike technique that opens fluid combo chains without demanding complex inputs, a feature designed to blend accessibility with technical depth.

Flow Guard, meanwhile, offers a stylish defensive option that emphasises smooth, realistic motion and works in tandem with Break and Rush to keep combat unpredictable.

Although no release date or platforms have been announced, the New Virtua Fighter Project signals Sega’s intent to evolve the franchise’s legacy of precision fighting with new mechanics that reward tactical expression.

With a teaser already available and more updates expected at future showcases, Virtua Fighter appears ready to reclaim its place in the fighting game spotlight.
