Banjo-Kazooie director exits Rare following Everwild cancellation

After the studio’s Everwild was shelved in July, Banjo-Kazooie director Grey Mayles has officially exited Rare.

Banjo-Kazooie director Grey Mayles has officially left Rare.

The developer had been at the studio for 36 years and had released several instalments in Rare’s beloved platformer series under his tenure, but Mayles has now confirmed he has exited the studio.

In a post on X, Mayles wrote: “Today was my last day at Rare. Thanks to everyone who played and enjoyed any of the games I helped create while I was there.

“Also thanks to all the people that worked on the games alongside me. It seemed fitting that I should say farewell with one final rhyme!”

Mayles – who worked on over 30 games during his time at Rare – then posted a poem he wrote about his experience at the studio.

An exerpt of the poem reads: “Mentored by the Ultimate greats, Expectations of Rare game traits,

“Each game adding to his skills, A memorable ride of many thrills,

“First three toads and then some apes, Donkey, Diddy, barrel of japes,

“Grand adventures of bird and bear, Whacking Ghoulies with haunted chair.”

He concluded: “His sack of fun upon his back, To set off down a different track,

“Leaving behind some parting advice, Have no fear, it’s helpful and nice,

“If captivating players is what you seek, Keep on making Rare games unique!”

Rare – which was acquired by Microsoft in 2002 – has been through a rough period in recent years, seeing its Sea of Thieves receive negative attention at its 2018 launch, and most recently having Everwild get cancelled in July 2025.
