The Witcher actor and Australian model announced their engagement on social media last month and Liam revealed that he took time away from his busy schedule on the Netflix show to pop the question.
The 35-year-old star told The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: “We got engaged a few months ago whilst I was still shooting The Witcher.
“I’ve been shooting The Witcher now for the last two years. I didn’t have a huge plan behind the engagement. I mean, I had enough of a plan to have bought the ring, but I was sort of just waiting for the right moment.”
Asked by Fallon if he’d found the ideal moment, Liam said: “I think so. Um, she said yes.”
The Hunger Games actor explained that he and Gabriella had to wait before celebrating their engagement with a holiday because of his busy schedule on The Witcher – in which he has taken over the lead character Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill.
Hemsworth, who was previously married to pop star Miley Cyrus, said: “It was a few months back, and then I just finished shooting The Witcher about three weeks ago, and then we went to the Maldives.”
Meanwhile, Gabriella previously revealed that she considers her relationship with Liam as “sacred” and feels that it is extremely important for the pair to keep things private.
Speaking to Australia’s Daily Telegraph’s Stellar magazine, she said: “My personal relationship is very, very important and very sacred to me.
“I completely understand [the interest in her relationship]. But at the end of the day, I guess I just like having that for me.
“My personal relationship is very, very important and very sacred to me.”
It was claimed that Liam’s family – including his actor brothers Luke and Chris Hemsworth – had been urging the star to propose to Gabriella for a long time.
A source told People: “His family loved her right away. She’s very sweet and genuine. Their relationship is relaxed and incredibly special. His family has been telling him for a while that he should propose.
“Liam was coming out of the marriage with Miley when he met Gabriella. They both grew up in Australia and were introduced by friends. He really liked her right away, but he was also hesitant to be in a relationship so soon after his separation.”
