A new ESRB rating suggests Red Dead Redemption is getting a native remaster for Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, likely including Undead Nightmare and positioning the release to fill Rockstar’s schedule ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI.
Red Dead Redemption looks set for a modern-console return, after a new ESRB rating surfaced listing the game for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The filing – rated M for Mature – strongly suggests a remaster or enhanced re-release of Rockstar Games’ 2010 cowboy-adventure game is in the works.
The filing also suggests the game will include the fan-favourite Undead Nightmare expansion, which is explicitly referenced via the rating’s mention of “zombies”.
While Rockstar has yet to formally announce the project, the timing aligns with industry expectations.
With Grand Theft Auto VI recently being delayed to November 2026, the studio now faces a large release gap – and a remastered Red Dead Redemption would be a high-profile way to fill it.
The move would also finally bring a native version to modern consoles, something fans have requested for years.
Red Dead Redemption is currently available on PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC, but the PS4 edition only runs on PS5 via backwards compatibility, and there’s no fully optimised version for current-gen hardware.
Likewise, the Xbox 360 version runs on Xbox Series X|S, but without updated visuals or system-level enhancements.
The new rating suggests a proper current-gen release is imminent, following years of rumours.
Previous reporting this summer also hinted at next-gen updates for Red Dead Redemption 2 and a potential Switch 2 port, though it’s unclear whether those projects are separate or were conflated.
Notably, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has spoken positively about Nintendo’s upcoming hardware, saying earlier this year that the company now has “great optimism for the platform” – a marked shift given historical challenges for third-party publishers on Nintendo systems.
If the ESRB listing is accurate, an announcement from Rockstar could arrive sooner rather than later, finally giving John Marston’s iconic journey the modern-console treatment fans have long hoped for.
