GTA VI publisher CEO says gaming is ‘moving towards PCs’ despite title having PS5 + Xbox-only launch

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says the industry is steadily shifting toward PC and open ecosystems even as GTA VI launches only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, leaving the long-rumoured PC version still unannounced.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says the games industry is “moving towards PCs” and increasingly favouring open ecosystems – even as Grand Theft Auto VI prepares to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Speaking to CNBC, Zelnick argued that while consoles remain relevant, the broader market has begun gravitating toward PC-style hardware and distribution.

He said: “I think it’s moving towards PC and business is moving towards open rather than closed.

“But if you define console as the property, not the system, then the notion of a very rich game that you engage in for many hours that you play on a big screen – that’s never going away.”

His comments land just days after Valve revealed its next-generation console, the Steam Machine, a living-room-focused gaming PC that underscores the trend toward hybrid hardware – and ahead of Microsoft’s own expected PC-console hybrid for the next Xbox generation.

Sony, meanwhile, is reportedly sticking with a traditional console with the PlayStation 6.

Zelnick also highlighted mobile as the fastest-growing segment of the market, noting that Take-Two expects roughly 10 per cent mobile revenue growth next quarter.

Mobile’s broad reach, portability and repeat engagement, he said, will continue to outpace console expansion.

Despite acknowledging PC’s rising influence – and revealing earlier this year that PC versions can account for up to 40 per cent of sales – Zelnick offered no update on when GTA VI might arrive on the platform.

Developer Rockstar Games’s strategy has historically staggered platform launches, and the company has yet to officially confirm a PC version.

For now, GTA VI remains locked to PS5 and Xbox at launch in 2026, even as its publisher positions the future of gaming somewhere beyond the traditional console box.
