The Homeland actor, 73, worked with the director on his 1987 fantasy film The Princess Bride and he was left devastated after hearing Reiner and his wife Michele had been found dead at their home in Los Angeles on December 14.
Speaking in TV special CBS News: Rob Reiner – Scenes from a Life – which aired on Sunday night (21.12.25), Patinkin recalled the moment he heard news of the couple’s death. He said: “I heard this news at about 11-something on Sunday night. I was in bed. I was in shock. I didn’t sleep at all.
“I just kept wailing and crying. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know how to process it. I still don’t know how to process it and I’m not looking for how to process it.”
Patinkin broke down in tears as he spoke about starring in The Princess Bride – declaring Reiner made his “dream” become reality by casting him in the movie.
The actor wiped away tears as he said: “Rob worked hard to try to get me to be the best human being I could be.
“One time he said to me, ‘I just wish you could get out of your own way,’ and I haven’t been able to achieve that to this day, but I won’t quit trying.
“He cared about my nature. He showed it to me over and over again.”
He went on to insist he will never forget the couple, saying: “I believe that we can connect with Rob and Michele, and every time we’re thinking about this or talking about it or anyone tells a story, he’s here. He will not be forgotten.”
Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 70, were found stabbed to death at their home in Los Angeles last weekend and their son Nick Reiner, 32, has since been charged with first-degree murder.
The couple were remembered by their children Romy, 27, and Jake Reiner, 34, in a statement which read: “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day.
“The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience.
“They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
The siblings went on to thank people for their love and support and appealed for “compassion and humanity” when discussing the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
They added: “We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life.
“We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
