Nintendo is set to reveal more details about Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream in a dedicated Nintendo Direct this week, offering a deeper look at the series’ long-awaited return and how it’s evolving for Switch and Switch 2.
Nintendo has announced a new Nintendo Direct presentation focused entirely on Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.
The broadcast will air on January 29, 2026 at 6am PT, 9am ET, and 2pm UK time, and is expected to run for around 20 minutes.
It follows closely after a recent movie-focused Nintendo Direct and marks a clear shift back to games, with this being the first time the Tomodachi Life franchise has received a dedicated showcase of its own.
Living the Dream is the third entry in the Tomodachi Life sim series, which tasks players with managing a chaotic island community populated by Mii characters based on friends, family, and celebrities.
While the franchise has always been more niche in Western markets, it has enjoyed strong popularity in Japan and a devoted global fanbase that has kept the series alive in memes and fan content during its long absence.
The original Tomodachi Collection launched on Nintendo DS in Japan in 2009, followed by Tomodachi Life on 3DS, which went on to sell more than six million copies worldwide.
Despite its success, the series was also remembered for controversy around its lack of same-sex relationships, prompting public criticism and a rare apology from Nintendo, which promised any future entry would better reflect its diverse audience.
The studio has yet to confirm exactly how Living the Dream addresses inclusivity, but fans are hopeful that this week’s Direct will finally provide answers.
The game has already drawn attention for smaller but symbolic changes, such as expanded Mii customisation options, including visible ears for the first time.
