Amy Madigan has joked she “terrorised” the Weapons child stars on set.
Amy Madigan has joked she “terrorised” the Weapons child stars during filming.
The 75-year-old actress won her first ever prize at the Actor Awards during Sunday’s (01.03.26) ceremony as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) recognised her highly acclaimed performance as the sinister Aunt Gladys in Zach Cregger’s horror film.
Speaking on stage in her acceptance speech, she thanked the cast and quipped: “All of the little kids who ran around with us. I did terrorize them, but I let them rip me apart, so it was OK.”
Madigan won in a highly competitive category, which also included Marty Supreme star Odessa A’zion, Sinners actress Wunmi Mosaku, One Battle After Another’s Teyana Taylor, and Wicked: For Good star Ariana Grande.
She said: “It’s such an honour to be here. I’ve been doing this a long a** time,
and I have never been nominated by the SAG committee and by the [Screen Actors] Guild.
“I’m a proud member, and I keep getting asked tonight, ‘What is it about this night?’
“I said, ‘Because actors love other actors. They just love being with them. We want to be working with them.’
“I’m a union person. I come from Chicago. Everybody in my family, all my friends, relatives, we’re all union people, and I don’t care what somebody says, they’re not going to bust us.”
She also took the time to poke fun at the Actor Awards trophy itself, comparing it to a Ken doll.
She teased: “Let’s see. What does he have here anyway? Sorry, I digress.
“It was like when you were little, and you had the Barbie and then you got Ken, and you whipped down his drawers and you went, ‘Ken has nothing!’
“Anyway, I really am digressing. I apologise. As you can tell, I’m nervous and I’m just overwhelmed and so happy. Thank you, everybody.”
Madigan will hoping to repeat her Actor Awards success at the Oscars on March 15, where she is in the running for Best Supporting Actress, which marks her second Academy Award nomination after 1985’s Twice In A Lifetime.
Weapons – which stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich and Benedict Wong – follows a group of strangers whose lives violently intersect after a class of children mysteriously vanish at 2:17am exactly.
Madigan’s performance as Aunt Gladys was a huge hit with fans, so much so that director Cregger is developing an origin film for the mysterious villain.
Speaking with The Wrap about whether the Aunt Gladys prequel might lessen the mystique of the character, he said: “It’s crossed my mind. “But I think that the Gladys story is such an interesting story that I think it’s going to feel very separate and stand on its own two feet, and I don’t think it’s going to diminish Weapons.”
