Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter were rumoured to be in a love triangle with Joshua Bassett.
Olivia Rodrigo is “so happy” for Sabrina Carpenter’s successes amid rumours of the pair being in a love triangle with Joshua Bassett.
It was rumoured that Olivia’s 2021 heartbreak track Drivers License was about her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series costar Joshua, 25, and when he was later spotted with Sabrina, people speculated if “that blonde girl” lyric in Olivia’s song referenced Sabrina.
And when the latter released Skin a few weeks later, it sparked rumours that the song was a response to Drivers License because of the lyrics “maybe you didn’t mean it/maybe blonde was the only rhyme” and “I wish you knew that even you can’t get under my skin if I don’t let you in”.
But Olivia, 23, has quashed claims of rivalry because she has “talked to her many times” over the years, and the pair have been pictured talking at awards bashes.
Speaking about Sabrina, 26, Olivia told British Vogue magazine’s April issue: “I think she’s great. I’m so happy for all of her success, too. I love the album she’s put out.”
Although Olivia was hesitant to talk about the Espresso hitmaker, adding: “No, no, no, it’s good. It’s just people just get weird and clickbaity – it’s all love, though. I’ve talked to her many times.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Olivia reflected on how hard and overwhelming her life was as a teenage star.
She explained: “Sometimes I meet a 17 or an 18-year-old nowadays and I’m like, ‘Wow, you are such a baby.’
“I can’t believe people were that mean to me. I was going through a break-up, working a full-time job, making [Sour], a student in high school and taking, like, three AP [college-level] classes.
“Looking back, I always think, ‘Wow, life will never be as hard as it was when I was 17.’”
In June 2025, Sabrina spoke about the “maybe you didn’t mean it/maybe blonde was the only rhyme” and “I wish you knew that even you can’t get under my skin if I don’t let you in” lyrics in Skin – heavily rumoured to be about her breakup with Joshua.
The star – who was linked with Joshua from 2020 until 2021 – told Rolling Stone: “I didn’t really intentionally do that. All I knew was that it wasn’t going to stop me from doing what I loved, ever. That’s kind of how I’ve always felt. Sometimes, it’s about how you are able to be resilient.”
And she went on to grow as a person.
Sabrina added: “What that era taught me was to just trust myself, and trust that everything is going to work out the way it’s supposed to, and trust that relationships are put into your life for a reason.
“You might not see that in the moment, but you see it later. I don’t think about it, ever.”
