FKA Twigs is suing former boyfriend Shia LeBeouf again after accusing him of trying to “silence” and “bully” her.
FKA Twigs is suing former boyfriend Shia LeBeouf again.
The 38-year-old singer – whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett – had previously filed documents in Los Angeles Superior Court against the Transformers star for alleged sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress during the course of their brief relationship in 2019, but last year she agreed to end the lawsuit and settle the case out of court.
However, attorneys for the Carpenter’s Son singer have now sought to block the controversial actor from being awarded “exorbitant monies” he sought in a secret arbitration complaint in December, which stemmped from a comment Twigs had made to the Hollywood Reporter in October in apparant violation of the terms of their settlement’s non-disclosure agreement.
The singer has argued she feels “bullied” and “silenced”.
Documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by Entertainment Weekly stated: “She files this action to right a wrong, and also on behalf of other women who are the victims of sexual and domestic violence who do not have the resources to speak out and defend themselves from predators.
“In so doing, she seeks to ensure that survivors of sexual misconduct are not themselves bullied or silenced like she was by agreements that violate California law and public policy.”
And in a statement, Twigs’ attorney accused 39-year-old Shia of attempting to “intimidate” the singer with his “foolish” legal action.
Mathew S. Rosengart, an attorney for Twigs, said: “This action was taken in response to Mr. LaBeouf’s attempt to silence and intimidate my client through a foolish, frivolous, and unlawful secret arbitration he filed against her in December.
“We are pleased to have obtained its dismissal earlier this month, and to her great credit and on behalf of other survivors as well, twigs refuses to be bullied anymore. This is not about money but about upholding and enforcing California law and policy designed to protect survivors by nullifying illegal NDAs.”
A representative for Shia had no comment.
Twigs previously said she came forward with her allegations in order to show how abusive relationships can affect anyone.
She said in the lawsuit: “I’d like to be able to raise awareness on the tactics that abusers use to control you and take away your agency.”
Shia had responded to the allegations through the New York Times, and admitted he had been “abusive to myself and everyone around me for years”.
However, he insisted that “many of these allegations are not true”, but also said he owed the women “the opportunity to air their statements publicly and accept accountability for those things I have done”.
He revealed last year that FKA was seeking $10 million in damages.
She once told the New York Times: “What I went through with Shia was the worst thing I’ve ever been through in the whole of my life.
“I don’t think people would ever think that it would happen to me. But I am not immune.”
In the joint statement after the settlement, the couple wished “each other personal happiness, professional success and peace in the future”.
