Sir David Beckham “didn’t always get it right” in his attempts to push the boundaries of fashion.
The former footballer was known for his wacky hair cuts and bold style choices back in the early days of his career and he can now look back and laugh at some of his fashion faux-pas as he has now embraced “simplicity” and “elegance”.
David – who is launching a new capsule collection for Hugo Boss – told WWD: “Simplicity is the elegance part. I know I’ve pushed the [fashion] boundaries over the years. I didn’t always get it right. But these are staples, things that everybody needs in their wardrobe”.
The new Boss by Beckham collection includes a double-breasted blazer in cream which was inspired by a silk-cashmere style the sports star wore to tennis tournament Wimbledon last year.
Beckham explained the jacket was so comfortable it turned him into a “fabric nerd”, he added: “I remember putting another suit on once, and I said I want to feel like this every time I put on a suit.”
David signed the deal with Boss last year and revealed he’s planning to spend more of his time focusing on fashion and design.
In a statement released at the time, he explained: “Over the last few years, I’ve been wanting to invest more time in design and fashion, but wanted to ensure I collaborated with a brand and team that could deliver something truly global and impactful.
“I’ve really enjoyed the collaboration with BOSS so far and have been impressed by the team’s ambition, creativity, and desire for excellence. “I look forward to sharing what we’ve been working on so far, including the Fall/Winter 2024 campaign as the first step in our long-term partnership.”
David has previously admitted his fashion designer wife Victoria Beckham is a “huge influence” on his “style” and makes sure he always looks good.
According to PEOPLE, he said: “She always gave me that confidence and, and she still does now, even after 27 years.
“She still gives me that confidence that, you know, wanting to look good and wanting to feel good.”
The former England captain confessed it’s a “problem” that his other half always “looks great” when asked if the former Spice Girl influences his style.
He said: “I’m not sure. I like to think I do, but I dare say the wrong thing. To be honest, she always looks good. It’s a good problem but it’s a problem. She always looks great. So it’s a pretty easy job for me.”
David also admitted he can’t get away with wearing anything his wife doesn’t like, adding: “She has a huge influence in my style. When I put something on, I know from her reaction whether I need to take it off or whether I need to keep it on.”
