Crimson Desert has sold a staggering number of copies worldwide in less than two weeks.
Crimson Desert has sold four million copies worldwide in less than two weeks.
The open world adventure game dropped on March 19, and hit two million sales in less than 24 hours, which rose to three million in just five days.
Developer Pearl Abyss has now announced on X: “#CrimsonDesert has sold through 4 million copies worldwide.
“Thank you to all the Greymanes who have been a part of this journey with us and for all of your incredible love and support.”
The game endured a rocky start, with players complaining about awkward controls and its use of AI art, with the studio addressing many of the issues with a large patch.
When it comes to the use of generative AI during development, Pearl Abyss explained that “some 2D visual props were created as part of early-stage iteration using experimental AI generative tools”.
They explained that while the assets in question helped the team “rapidly explore tone and atmosphere in the earlier phases of production”, the intention was “always” to replace them “following final work and review by our art and development teams”.
The continued in an apology on X days after release: “Following reports from our community, we have identified that some of these assets were unintentionally included in the final release.
“This is not in line with our internal standards, and we take full responsibility for it.”
The studio noted that they should have “clearly disclosed” its use of AI, regardless of the intention to replace assets.
Pearl Abyss added: “While these tools were primarily used during early production, with the expectation that these assets would be replaced prior to release, we recognize that this does not excuse the lack of transparency.
“We sincerely apologize for these oversights.”
The company insisted a “comprehensive audit of all in-game assets” is underway, and they are “taking steps to replace any affected content”. The studio added: “Updated assets will be rolled out in upcoming patches.
“In parallel, we are reviewing and strengthening our internal processes to ensure greater transparency and consistency in how we communicate with players moving forward.”
