Lamar Odom thinks education is important to overcoming addiction.
Lamar Odom is “completely sober”.
The 46-year-old former sports star has opened up about his sobriety journey, revealing that he’s benefiting from being “educated on disease”.
He told Page Six Radio: “Right now I’m completely sober—I don’t even drink alcohol.
“If you do your education, addiction [is where] you suffer from a brain disease, just like cancer or any other disease. I don’t think anyone would wish to have cancer.”
Lamar, who was arrested and charged with a DUI in Las Vegas in January, added that education has been key to staying sober.
He said: “So, me being educated on disease, the more and more I get educated, the more and more it’s easier for me to stay sober.”
He also explained the mindset that helps him resist temptation.
The former NBA star – who was married to Khloe Kardashian between 2009 and 2016 – said: “If you have an addictive mind, the last thing you want to do is feed it any type of drugs.”
Lamar suffered a near-fatal overdose in 2015, which led to him being in a coma for three days.
However, he recently downplayed his ex-wife’s role in his recovery, insisting that a “miracle” saved his life.
He told the Today show: “God saved my life. My lord saved my life, honestly.”
Lamar suffered six heart attacks and 12 strokes after his overdose. But he claimed that God, rather than Khloe, helped him through the situation.
He said: “God took care of me the most. What I came back from is like a medical miracle.”
The pair’s relationship was revisited in Netflix’s Untold: The Death and Life of Lamar Odom, in which Khloe opened up about Lamar’s struggles.
She said: “The drug build-up was getting worse and worse. There were many times Lamar would go for 12 hours or two days and escape rehab. He would go on a drug bender and no one could find him.
“I was either looking for him in alleys or looking for him in motels. He would have tinfoil cutouts or spoons and he was freebasing things and leaving things everywhere. I remember needing to go to hotel rooms to clean up after him.”
