Molly Gordon worked with “stuffed sheep and puppets” on The Sheep Detectives.
The 31-year-old actress stars alongside the likes of Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Hong Chau, and Dame Emma Thompson in The Sheep Detectives, the new mystery-comedy film that tells the story of a shepherd who spends his time reading murder mystery novels to his flock of sheep – but Molly has now revealed that she barely worked with any live animals at all.
Speaking to People, the actress shared: “We worked with stuffed sheep and puppets. So I didn’t really encounter a lot of live animals.
“At the camera test, they let me hold a baby sheep, but then it was mostly just me alone on a mountain kind of acting opposite nothing.
“So it really was a challenge and I learned a lot, and I have a lot of respect for people that work opposite tennis balls. It’s a different experience.”
Molly relished the experience of working with computer-generated animals in The Sheep Detectives. The actress was also pleasantly surprised when she watched the edited version of the film for the first time.
She said: “It became very clear to me I had never done it on the first day.
“It was an exciting challenge, and then it’s really exciting to see the final movie because you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I didn’t realise this is what I was shooting.’ You get to be a part of the discovery like the audience.”
Nicholas Braun, Molly’s co-star, also enjoyed the experience of making the movie.
The 38-year-old actor said: “It was pretty unique in that way
“We had stuffed animals that — they really designed what these sheep characters were going to look like. So they made very specific stuffed animal versions of them. They had big 2D cardboard posters that were life-sized, so we could see the proper eye level and everything.
“But no, I’ve never had to imagine what an animal is doing on the other side of the camera — locking eyes with a sheep. It’s pretty special.”
