Rebecca Black admits to being inspired by ‘showgirl-ism’

Rebecca Black has opened up about her music inspirations.

Rebecca Black feels inspired by “showgirl-ism”.

The 29-year-old pop star – who rose to fame in 2011, when her debut single Friday went viral – has recalled feeling particularly inspired by the Lady Marmalade track, which featured Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, and Pink, during her younger years.

Rebecca told Bustle: “To have four just absolute Goliath artists from all different sects of the pop industry collaborating on this one thing and upholding their own flavour? I’ve watched that video so many times.

“It feels like so many artists in pop are inspired by showgirl-ism. Not just in the Taylor Swift way — but there’s this collective celebration of the fabulousness of femininity.”

Rebecca is also a huge fan of British pop star Robbie Williams and his Rock DJ music video.

She said: “I think it came out too early in my time, but somebody showed it to me when I was in the UK a few years ago, and it’s become one of my favourite pop songs of all time.

“It’s so energetic and so anthemic and also makes no sense — those are my other favourite kinds of pop songs. And the video is such a striking, surprising, extremely pop concept where he strips down, shall we say, to the truest version of himself.

“I don’t want to ruin the surprise because I think it’s one of the best videos ever. I love to show people that video.”

Meanwhile, Rebecca previously explained that she wants to create her own distinctive brand of pop music.

The singer – who released her SALVATION album in 2025 – told DIY magazine: “I’ve been such a big fan of dance music forever.

“I loved artists like Skrillex and Daft Punk. Those influences started the birth of SALVATION, and influenced the way I approached silence and sounds and minimalism. But what I really wanted, more than anything, was to make a type of pop I wasn’t hearing anyone doing, in my own way.”
