Olivia Wilde nearly drowned filming a scene – and the incident ended up being used in the finished movie.
Olivia Wilde’s real near-drowning was used in a film.
The 42-year-old actress-and-director learned to free dive for one of her earliest roles in 2006’s horror movie Turistas, but things went badly wrong during one under-water scene and she had to be rescued by a cameraman.
Speaking to The Invite co-star Seth Rogen for Entertainment Weekly for their Lie vs. Lie video series, she said:”I had to learn how to free dive to go into tunnels and hold my breath for minutes upon minutes.
“We had to go down into this tunnel, and I got lost. It’s a job a stunt person should do. And you have to suck down little bubbles of air that look like little mercury pods.”
Olivia was taken underwater with a scuba tank before every take and while filming one scene, she accidentally “sucked down a bunch of water” into her lungs.
She recalled: “My character was supposed to be drowning, so when I started drowning, they were like, ‘All right…she’s nailing it, she locked in.
“And the cameraman dropped the camera to grab me, because he was like, ‘She dead.'”
Astonishingly, the footage was used in the finished film.
Seth asked: “Is it in the movie?”
Olivia replied: “It was the only take, so it had to be [in the movie].”
Elsewhere in the conversation, Seth, 44, recalled a particularly painful injury he had suffered at home.
He said: “I once, when I was younger, thought it’d be cool to stick my hand in a fan in the ceiling. I did it alone, to see what it felt like. [It] really, really, really hurt.
“I thought it would just stop [spinning]. I thought it would stop much easier than it did, and it really hurt my hand. It chunked a big chunk of skin off my finger. It didn’t just hurt in a bruise, it almost felt like it broke my hand — I was bleeding profusely after it happened.”
Olivia then asked Seth about the fall out from the incident.
She said: “And you had to say to your mom, like…”
But the Studio star laughed as he interupted to admit: “No, I was like 30! I had to go to my wife! She was like, ‘What the f*** did you do to yourself?’ I was like, ‘I stuck my hand in the fan.’ She was like, ‘Why?’ “
Olivia replied: “This was only okay if you were 11.”
Seth said: “Yeah, no. I was a grown man.”
