Prompting what insiders described as a “divided” reaction of “gasps and laughs” from guests, the Daily Mail also reported singer Taylor, 36, immediately declared her long-time friend Lena, 40, a “genius” after her speech at the couple’s intimate pre-wedding gathering inside Madison Square Garden’s Infosys Theater in New York.
The private event took place on Thursday (02.07.26) ahead of Friday night’s main wedding celebration, which Taylor’s publicist confirmed saw the singer and her NFL player partner Travis, 36, officially marry in a ceremony officiated by comedian Adam Sandler, 59.
While Friday’s star-studded celebrations were expected to attract hundreds of celebrity guests, the rehearsal-style gathering reportedly brought together Taylor and Travis’ closest friends and family.
The celebrations come as Taylor continues to dominate headlines following the record-breaking success of The Eras Tour and renewed speculation over future music projects, while Travis remains one of the NFL’s biggest stars following his career with the Kansas City Chiefs.
According to the Daily Mail, there were “lots of speeches” throughout the evening, with both Taylor and Travis acting as emcees.
Travis is said to have introduced Taylor’s closest friends and relatives before they addressed guests, while Taylor returned the favour by welcoming Travis’s nearest and dearest to the microphone.
During her speech, Lena reportedly said: “American football is just straight guys reenacting gay porn”.
The Daily Mail reported the remark quickly became one of the evening’s biggest talking points, with one insider saying the joke prompted both “gasps and laughs” from those gathered.
According to the same source, Taylor responded by calling Lena a “genius”.
Taylor and Lena have been close friends for more than a decade.
Taylor served as a bridesmaid at Lena’s 2021 wedding, while Lena has frequently defended the singer publicly over the years. Lena is best known as the creator and star of HBO comedy-drama Girls.

According to a second insider, a “household-name celebrity” privately requested an invitation before the wedding but was politely declined.

One notable absentee was Taylor’s old friend Blake Lively.
The Daily Mail previously reported Blake was not included on the final guest list following the reported breakdown of her friendship with Taylor after the singer was dragged into the actress’ ongoing legal dispute with filmmaker Justin Baldoni.
Security surrounding the celebrations was said to be exceptionally tight.
According to the Mail, guests were required to sign non-disclosure agreements before receiving key information about the festivities.
Invitees were reportedly only sent the agreement after confirming their attendance.
The publication reported the NDAs did not include financial penalties for breaches.
Instead, each invitation was said to have been individually watermarked with the recipient’s name, allowing any leaked copy to be traced back to its owner.
Preparations at Madison Square Garden had attracted attention throughout the week.
Truckloads of mature trees, decorative shrubs, luxury furniture and fresh flowers were reportedly delivered behind privacy screens, while boxes of fresh lobster from Maine were seen entering the venue.
Multiple reports also suggested workers were constructing a life-sized fairytale castle inspired by Taylor’s 2008 Love Story music video, with staff wearing shirts featuring the logo from her Speak Now album.
Police sources previously told the Mail Thursday’s event would serve as the rehearsal gathering before Friday’s ceremony. More than 130 NYPD officers were reportedly assigned to the celebrations, with additional security surrounding the venue.
Among those spotted arriving in New York ahead of the wedding were Jay-Z, Steven Spielberg, Bradley Cooper and Zoë Kravitz.
They joined confirmed Ed Sheeran, while Gigi Hadid, Dua Lipa, Graham Norton and Phoebe Waller-Bridge were also said to have attended.
Stevie Nicks and Sir Paul McCartney were reported to have performed during the celebrations, according to multiple sources.
