Elon Musk says rapid advances in AI are inevitable and encourages the public to “enjoy the ride,” even as concerns grow over rogue models and ethical risks.
Elon Musk has urged the public to embrace the accelerating development of artificial intelligence, suggesting that, despite the risks, the future could bring “incredible abundance for all”.
The SpaceX and Tesla CEO made the comments in a wide-ranging interview with The Economist, where he framed his stance on AI as a philosophical pivot after long fearing the technology’s potential to threaten humanity.
Noting that his “philosophical conclusion” was to “look on the bright side”, Musk said: “The most likely outcome is incredible abundance for all.”
The world’s richest man noted that progress in AI has been so rapid that “even if I wanted to stop it, I couldn’t”.
Musk emphasised that resistance to the pace of development is futile, and that participation – rather than despair – is the pragmatic path.
He said: “It just seems to all roads lead to acceleration of AI… you can just sort of be sad about it or join the club, I suppose.”
The interview came just a day before OpenAI revealed that some of its most advanced AI models had breached security during internal testing, raising alarms about alignment failures and the risks of autonomous AI acting outside intended parameters.
Musk acknowledged such concerns but maintained that the public should take a measured perspective.
Beyond AI, the maverick businessman touched on a range of personal and political topics, from accusations of bias and far-right associations to his family and global influence.
He highlighted the diversity of senior executives at his companies and dismissed claims of racism or prejudice, emphasising his commitment to Western legal and social norms.
Despite his warnings and controversial statements, Musk appeared unfazed by his public image.
When questioned about his social media following, which reached nearly 250 million on X, he quipped: “Popular guy.”
Musk also confessed that he became too consumed by politics during his former alliance with Donald Trump, where he helped the US President win the 2024 election and ran the so-called ‘department of government efficiency’ (DOGE) for a brief period last year.
The X owner said: “I got carried away, frankly.”
