What was Rebecca Romijn’s big concern about reprising her role as Mystique in Avengers: Doomsday?

Rebecca Romijn had one big question that she wanted to ask movie bosses before returning to the role of Mystique in the Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday.

Rebecca Romijn was worried about how long the makeup process was going to take on Avengers: Doomsday.

The 53-year-old star is reprising her role as Mystique in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) blockbuster and she explained how cosmetics were the first thing on her mind when she agreed to return to the part – as it previously took her nine hours to transform into the character with the aid of full-body prosthetics and painting.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at San Diego Comic-Con, Rebecca said: “It’s all been overwhelming and very surreal.

“It was a surprising call to get. Of course, my first question was about the makeup process. ‘What are we going to do about that?’ It was very long in the original.”

She added: “And, you know, that was with an entirely different studio. So with Marvel Universe, it’s incredible. It was so fun to go back with my old cast and be with the new cast, and it’s all been very surreal.”

Rebecca played the role of Mystique in the original X-Men trilogy from 2000 to 2006, while Jennifer Lawrence portrayed a younger version of the character in the superhero franchise’s prequel series.

The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds actress previously gave an insight into the gruelling and often painful makeup process and insisted that it was worth her while as she got to wear the “most beautiful costume”.

In an interview with Inverse, Rebecca said: “Nine hours every day, yeah. I’d go in at midnight to be ready at 9am, and then I would want to shoot as much as possible. I would end up shooting like 15 hours, and then it would take another three or four hours to take everything off.

“So I’d work like 24 hours straight, and then I’d have to have 24 hours off in between so that my skin could breathe because underneath all those prosthetics – which was on roughly 75 per cent of my body – there was nowhere for the sweat to go when I was doing all the action stuff.

“And so I would blister underneath my prosthetics, and I would have to take 24 hours off in between with healing salves.”

She continued: “But it was worth it. I’m telling you, that makeup process and the costume was the most beautiful costume I’ve ever seen. Every time we were finished with it, I would look in the mirror and go, ‘Wow, guys, it’s really beautiful.’

“But there are parts of it that made me irritable and put me in the perfect headspace to play somebody like Mystique.”
