Sam Altman has pushed back against Elon Musk’s recent AI prediction.
Sam Altman doesn’t believe AI can solve economic inequality.
Elon Musk, Altman’s tech rival and the owner of X, recently suggested that AI will, one day, make money obsolete – but Altman doesn’t agree with that idea.
The 41-year-old billionaire – who is the CEO of OpenAI – told TMZ: “I mean, certainly one of the greatest concerns with AI that I have is around concentration of power, concentration of wealth.
“There are all of these ways where I think it will make a lot of things much cheaper and better, and you don’t have to buy a car, and that’ll be great.”
Despite this, Altman insisted Musk is wrong about the long-term impact of AI.
He said: “There are many reasons to think it won’t just magically solve wealth inequality.”
By contrast, Musk previously claimed that AI will, in ten years’ time, create an “incredible abundance for all”.
The Tesla boss explained to The Economist: “What do you want money for? You want money for goods and services, right? You want money for food, housing, transport, entertainment.
“Well, if that is so abundant that there’s more, that the robots and AI are providing more goods and services than any human could possibly consume, what do you need money for in that case?”
On the other hand, Musk predicted that humans could lose control to bots.
He said: “Like if the difference in intelligence between AI and humans is vastly greater than the difference in intelligence between AI and chimpanzees, it’s hard to imagine that the chimpanzees would be in charge.”
Musk predicted, too, that AI will surpass human intelligence within the next five years.
The billionaire – who has been particularly outspoken on various political and social issues in recent years – explained: “There really won’t be anything that AI can’t do better than humans, apart from being human perhaps.”
