Actor Kumail Nanjiani is to make his directorial debut with horror comedy Howl.
The Fallout star will helm the werewolf film for Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures, with the movie written by Madison Vanderberg – and the original screenplay for the movie has already appeared on Hollywood’s prestigious Black List, back in 2024.
A tagline for Howl reads: “Howl follows a famous but notoriously troubled actor who announces on a talk show that in less than an hour, he’ll turn into a werewolf — on live TV.”
Nanjiani is also set to star in the film, presumably as the actor/werewolf, whilst the remaining cast members have yet to be announced.
News of the directorial debut comes after a busy time for the actor and comedian, whose first comedy special in a decade, titled Night Thoughts, came out earlier this year.
He will also soon be seen in the fourth season of critically-acclaimed TV show The White Lotus and the Mel Brooks spoof spin-off Very Young Frankenstein, while he’s working on an adaptation of the graphic novel Sex Criminals with wife Emily V. Gordon for Prime Video.
When it comes to his career, Nanjiani previously said he makes it a mission to take on projects that scare him.
He told NPR: “My relationship to fear has changed, or I’m trying to actively change it. Fear used to be something I would try and avoid, and now fear is something I court.
“If I read a script, it used to be if there was stuff I didn’t know how to do in it, it would be hard for me to – am I not – am I choosing to not do this because I don’t think it’s the right thing or because I’m scared?
“And for many years in my life, I could not tell the difference. Like, I would say no to things and in that moment not know if I’m scared of it or if I genuinely don’t want to do it. So my relationship to fear was really trying to avoid fear.
“Now, if I read a script, to me, the most exciting thing is I actually don’t know how to do this, and that is terrifying. So I have to run towards it.”
