Liza Minnelli struggling to find words after Dolly Parton’s death

Liza Minnelli has reflected on her many years of friendship with “truly supportive” Dolly Parton following the death of the country legend.

The Cabaret actress is devastated by the loss of the “truly supportive” country legend – who passed away on Tuesday (25.08.26) at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer – and she’s reflected on how she’ll miss their “spicy girl gossip” after decades of friendship.

Liza recalled how she and Dolly met through their shared former agent Sam Haskell, who also brought them together with singer Michael Feinstein.

She wrote on Instagram: “Hey Kids, The sound we hear isn’t thunder; it’s hearts cracking all over the world. No. It can’t be true. @dollyparton joined the celestial choir. This is devastating for so many reasons. I love Dolly. And she was always a truly supportive friend. We cheered each other on many times. When I was in trouble? Dolly knew it.

“We shared great, loving friends. Sam Haskell, President of Magnolia Hill Productions at Warner Bros. Discovery was mega-agent for Dolly, @michaelfeinsteinsings , me and television’s brightest stars. Because of Sam, our tribe has special and beautiful memories of Dolly. Sam brought Dolly into our lives in powerful ways. Michael sang “Love Is Here To Stay” with Dolly for his Gershwin Country album, which I Executive Produced. Of course, it was a hit.

“What I’m not going to share tonight? Spicy girl gossip during great meals, after visiting each others’ concerts. After Sam left William Morris, he built a television empire starring Dolly in 12 of his films – winning every award, including Emmys. A loving nudge from my suit @jasonwintersgriot , said “Let’s follow Sam down the Yellow Brick Road and ask him to build something wonderful, for us.” And he has. That’s another story. (sic)”

Because Liza, 80, admitted she was struggling to express everything she wanted to say, she ended her post with Sam’s previous “beautiful” statement about Dolly’s death.

She posted: “There’s much to say at this moment. I can’t get any words out. My throat … my heart … are full. I turn to Sam, as I always do, who shared these beautiful words earlier in People Magazine: “The world knew Dolly as an incomparable artist, songwriter, businesswoman and humanitarian. I knew a woman of profound faith, dazzling humor, extraordinary integrity and boundless generosity. She made people feel seen. She never forgot where she came from, and she used every gift God gave her to lift others. I have often said that Dolly was beloved by the world because she loved the world back. Today, those words carry a weight I never imagined. Her songs will be sung for generations. Her stories will continue to gather families. And every child who discovers a book through her @imaginationlibrary is part of her living legacy.”(sic)”
