Hunger Games star Mckenna Grace has opened up on how her scoliosis battle has altered her fashion choices.
Mckenna Grace has revealed how “life-changing” back surgery has changed her sense of style.
The 20-year-old actress, who was diagnosed with scoliosis aged 12, underwent surgery four years ago to prevent her spinal curvature from impacting her lung, reducing it from 45 to six degrees.
She told Footwear News: “My style has changed a lot. I had a really big life-changing surgery on my back a few years ago that changed the way I stand and the way that my body looks in clothes, so I feel like my style is kind of ever-evolving.”
More recently, Mckenna has embraced “being a girly and feminine” with her fashion choices, including “skirts and dresses”.
She added: “When I was a kid, I just wanted to be a tomboy.
“I didn’t want anything to do with being girly and feminine because I didn’t want anybody to see me as weak or lesser than.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realise that — it also doesn’t matter what other people think of me — but just because I’m feminine doesn’t make me weak.”
And while Mckenna still loves “wearing heels and feeling fancy and running around and feeling all glammed up”, she loves to stay comfy in a pair of Crocs.
The actress and singer, who is fronting a new campaign for the footwear brand, said: “Whenever I’m on the way to the event, I’ll be wearing my Crocs or something because I am not going to be sitting in those shoes all day and night.”
Mckenna joked that she could have done with a pair on the set of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
She quipped: “Whatever President Snow was putting us in in the game, those were some uncomfortable boots.
“I was always glad to get home and change out of those, but the costumes definitely put me in [character] because what we were wearing for the Games was quite uncomfortable.
“So it felt like something President Snow would do.”
Mckenna is also set to play Daphne Blake in Netflix’s Scooby-Doo: Origins, but she refused to be drawn into teasing her costume just yet.
She said: “I can’t say too much about the wardrobe or what I’m exactly wearing, but it is crazy to see myself looking like Daphne.”
