Carly Rae Jepsen says she parted ways with Scooter Braun because her career vision had shifted away from the mainstream direction he championed, insisting the split was amicable and long overdue.
Carly Rae Jepsen parted ways with manager Scooter Braun as she had a different vision for her career that wasn’t “mainstream”.
Following the success of her 2011 breakthrough hit Call Me Maybe and a co-sign by Justin Bieber, Carly Rae teamed up with the Baby hitmaker’s manager and landed a joint recording contract with his label, Schoolboy Records, and major label Interscope Records.
However, in 2023, a series of artists stopped working with Scooter, and Carly Rae followed suit.
In a new interview, the 40-year-old singer insists there are no hard feelings between them; she simply had a different vision for her career.
She told The Hollywood Reporter: “I’ve had some good experiences with people, and I’ve had hard ones too.
“It’s taken a second to figure out the right team for my management, and now I’m happier than I’ve ever been.”
She said of Scooter: “I knew that I was on a different journey than he understood.
“I wanted to do something a little bit less mainstream, and I liked what he had offered, but I didn’t necessarily think it was what I wanted anymore. I felt like it was just going to be a little bit easier to shake hands, walk away and go let my freak flag fly, so to speak.
She noted: “I took one of his employees with me.”
A string of major names – including Justin, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato and Hilary Duff – eventually parted ways with Scooter Braun, and he formally stepped back from artist management in 2024, bringing his 23‑year run to an end.
He later became CEO of entertainment company HYBE America, but stepped back from the role in 2025.
Carly Rae is still with Interscope and will release the double album Day and Night on September 18.
The artist has made a pattern of releasing companion records, with Day and Night following 2022’s The Loneliest Time and 2023’s The Loveliest Time, as well as 2019’s Dedicated and 2020’s Dedicated Side B.
