Kit Harington previously ruled out reprising his role as Jon Snow after shelving a planned Game of Thrones sequel, but he seems to have changed his mind.
Kit Harington is open to reviving his scrapped Game of Thrones sequel series.
The 39-year-old actor, who starred as Jon Snow, King of the North, in all eight seasons of HBO’s fantasy epic, has revealed he’s performed a U-turn in his mind when it comes to reprising the iconic character in the future, after plans for a spinoff show were previously shelved.
He told the Happy Sad Confused podcast: “We were developing it for two years or so.
“And I still think there’s a world in which something could work. I wouldn’t have gone into it in the first place if I didn’t.
“But I was very insistent at the start – and they were as well, HBO and George [RR Martin] – of like, ‘If we don’t find the right thing, let’s not do it. It’s much, much better we don’t.’
“After a little while of thinking about it – it kind of was me, [I said], ‘This isn’t quite the right [story].'”
Back in 2022, it was reported that a sequel series following Jon Snow in a life of exile beyond the Wall was in development.
Two years later, Kit revealed the project had been axed, but now he’d be in a better place to return to Game of Thrones.
He explained: “I think I was right, because I’ve gone and done all these other things and now I feel more comfortable with that character and that world again, in where it sits in my life.”
In 2024, Kit insisted he had kept quiet about the spinoff “because it was in development”, and he wanted to temper expectations.
He told Screen Rant: “I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorising, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen.
“Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it’s worth it. And currently, it’s not.
“Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough.
“So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”
As recently as December 2025, Kit had distanced himself from ever playing Jon Snow again.
Asked if he would voice the character in a potential new Game of Thrones audiobook, he told Variety: “No, god no. I don’t wanna go anywhere near it. I spent 10 years doing that. Thanks, I’m alright.”
Kit is currently preparing to film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second season of HBO’s adaptation of JK Rowling’s wizarding saga.
The series will launch this Christmas with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Kit will join for the second run as Gilderoy Lockhart, having recently voiced the character in Audible’s recent Potter audiobook series.
