Selena Gomez wants to break ‘taboo’ by having own children ‘eventually’

Pop star and actress Selena Gomez wants to have her own children with Benny Blanco “eventually”, and in doing so she wants to break the “taboo” surrounding non-traditional paths to motherhood.

Selena Gomez wants to have her own children “eventually”.

The 34-year-old singer and actress previously admitted she cannot carry children, but the Lose You to Love Me hitmaker – who married record producer Benny Blanco last year – is determined to have kids one day to help break the “taboo” surrounding non-traditional paths to motherhood.

Speaking about her non-profit initiative Rare Impact Fund – which aims to raise $100 million over 10 years to expand youth mental health services and education – at Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York City, she said: “I think what makes me proud is knowing that we’re truly making a difference.

“I think there’s a bunch of stigma around everything and I have a 13-year-old sister who means the world to me, and eventually I’ll have my own children, and this is something that I don’t want to be taboo.

“I don’t mind if people think it’s ‘out there’, but I love what we have accomplished and I think we’ll just continue to grow in that manner and hopefully continue to do great things.”

In 2024, Selena revealed she is unable to carry her own children.

She told Vanity Fair magazine: “I haven’t ever said this… but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children.

“I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy… that was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Shortly afterwards, the star insisted she was not ashamed to admit she can’t carry children and has bipolar disorder.

Speaking at a Women in Film event which she attended alongside her then-11-year-old sister Gracie Elliott Teefey, who is now 13, the former Wizards of Waverly Place star explained: “I truly believe that there is power in being vulnerable and telling people when you need help, when you want help.

“That is not shameful. So yeah, I shared that I can’t carry a child. Yeah, I shared I have bipolar – f*** off. That’s what my life is like.”

Selena added she wants to “advocate for women”, and that’s why she shares her pain.

She said: “That’s why I like to be honest – because everybody’s going through something.

“I don’t have it all together. I’m me. And that’s all I can be.

“So do not ever let anyone tell you that you are not a good person, that you aren’t kind, that you won’t treat people with respect.

“’Cause that is not lame, that is so cool of you guys.

“And that is the fact. So, screw anyone who tells you you’re a victim. You’re a survivor in my book.”
