Big Bang Theory cast found it ‘difficult’ to see Chuck Lorre during Charlie Sheen feud

Mayim Bialik has reflected on Chuck Lorre seeing The Big Bang Theory set as a “safe space” during his feud with Charlie Sheen in 2011.

Mayim Bialik says the Big Bang Theory cast found it “very difficult” to see Chuck Lorre during his Charlie Sheen feud.

The 50-year-old actress spent almost a decade as Amy Farrah Fowler on the producer’s beloved sitcom, which ran from 2007 to 2019 and was a “safe space” for Chuck during the chaos of Two And A Half Men.

Asked how she feels about him seeing it that way, Mayim told her partner and Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown podcast co-host Jonathan Cohen: “I remember those years.

“It was very, very difficult for us to see him like that.”

The comments, which were shared by Entertainment Weekly, come from Tuesday’s (20.10.26) episode of the podcast, where the couple are joined by Chuck himself.

Mayim noted that while “a lot of people are like, ‘Serves you right’, like, ‘You’re a rich producer,'” there was still a “human” element to the drama.

In 2011, towards the end of the eighth season, Charlie branded Chuck a “clown” and a “stupid, little man” in a public barrage which saw him fired from the show.

The actor responded with a $100 million wrongful termination lawsuit, which was eventually settled.

Mayim said: “Like, [Chuck’s] a guy from Long Island. He’s a musician who just wanted to play his guitar on stage and meet pretty girls, right?

“There’s a humanity to when the person that you are working with is, first of all, very sick, and not behaving kindly, and then publicly assaults you.

“That’s very, very powerful, and this was the beginning of social media.”

She noted that social media “ran with it in a way”, with Charlie’s insults towards Chuck – which included antisemitic remarks – being “magnified”.

She quipped that the same situation today would be seen like “another day” and “another actor cursing at a producer.

She added: “Back then it was like, ‘What?’ And also Charlie Sheen, this is a legacy actor, meaning, his father’s Martin Sheen. His brother’s Emilio Estevez!

“Like, come on. It’s Hollywood royalty. It was huge.”

Charlie would subsequently enter rehab in 2011, and two years later, he tried to reach out to “make amends” with Chuck, but his attempt went unanswered.

The producer said at the time that the actor’s meltdown “broke my heart”.

It wasn’t until 2023 that they were able to reconnect, when Chuck cast Charlie in his HBO comedy Bookie.

The producer told Variety at the time: “I was nervous, but almost as soon as we started talking, I remembered, we were friends once.

“And that friendship just suddenly seemed to be there again. I don’t want to be too mawkish about it, but it was healing.

“And he was also totally game to make fun of himself. When he came to the table read of that episode, I walked up, and we hugged. It was just great.”
