Super Bowl 2027 will get real time Star Wars animated telecast with C-3PO and more

The Super Bowl will be transformed into an animated telecast with avatars of the players, and Star Wars characters subbing in “during key moments”.

Disney is set to air a real time Star Wars animated telecast of Super Bowl LXI.

The Big Game is set for February 14, 2027 and sci-fi fans will be able to watch in a galaxy far, far away with C-3PO and more characters set to get involved in a unique broadcast.

In a press release, Disney said: “The Star Wars animated telecast will recreate every play of Super Bowl LXI in real time, transforming players on the field into animated avatars, while Star Wars characters sub in during key moments and various Easter eggs appear throughout the game.”

Star Wars Funday Football will stream live on Disney+ and the ESPN App, as well as airing on Disney Channel and Disney XD.

Star Wars legend Anthony Daniels will be back as the voice of C-3PO for the broadcast.

The telecast will be created using “data visualisation technology” from Sony’s Beyond Sports, which has already worked on animated gameplay for the Funday Football series in the past.

Disney explained: “The technology transforms live gameplay into animation in real time by combining player tracking data from the NFL’s Next Gen Stats and Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking.

“As Super Bowl LXI approaches, more details about the Star Wars animated presentation will be announced, including visual settings, commentators, characters and more.”

Star Wars Football Funday will mark 50 years of the franchise, with a newly restored of version of the original 1977 film, which was later titled Star Wars: A New Hope, will return to the big screen on February 19.

ESPN, Disney and the NFL have worked on other animated alternate telecasts, but this will mark the first for the Super Bowl.

In 2023, there was a Toy Story Funday Football, followed by one based on The Simpsons in 2024, and last year’s using characters from Monsters Inc.

Star Wars Funday Football will air live in the US, Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Canada, sub-Saharan Africa, Japan, Sweden, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

The animated game will also be available on demand to Disney+ subscribers in those markets and others, including the UK, France, Germany, South Korea and more.
