Stevie Wonder has filed a lawsuit to evict his former fiancee Carmen Efferson from his home in Los Angeles, where she has lived rent-free for the past 38 years.
Stevie Wonder has filed a lawsuit to evict his former fiancee who has lived rent-free in his Los Angeles home since 1988.
The I Just Called to Say I Love You singer has taken legal action against Carmen Efferson to demand that she moves out of the three-bedroom property that he owns in the Hollywood Hills neighbourhood.
Court papers state that Efferson has lived in the house for free for the past 38 years under an oral agreement.
Efferson told Billboard on Friday (23.10.26) that she was engaged to Stevie when she moved into the property, although the pair never ended up marrying.
The lawsuit claims that the music legend’s representatives attempted to enter the house three times in July to inspect it for an insurance renewal – but Efferson refused to let them in and told Stevie’s attorney to “f*** the f*** off in an email”.
She wrote in an email sent to lawyer David Huff: “Please refrain from your racist coldblooded ‘white male privilege’ tone.
“I am feeling harassed. Regarding your ORDERS of entering into the place where I am living, I do not consent. Do not make any attempt to make any kind of contact with me.”
The Part-Time Lover hitmaker’s legal team served Efferson with several notices warning they would seek her eviction from the house if she did not comply and her refusal to let in the insurance inspectors led to the filing of the lawsuit on Thursday (22.10.26).
Wonder is suing Efferson for unlawful detainer.
The 76-year-old singer wants a judge to order her removal from the house and argues she should pay $600 in damages as her behaviour has led to the property’s insurance to lapse.
Meanwhile, Stevie is currently touring to mark the 50th anniversary of his acclaimed album Songs in the Key of Life and stated last year that he intends to keep on performing for as long as he can “breathe”.
He told the BBC’s Sidetracked podcast: “For as long as you breathe, for as long as your heart beats, there’s more for you to do. I’m not gonna stop the gift that keeps pouring through my body.
“I love doing what I’m doing. An artist never stops drawing. As long as you can imagine is as long as you are going to be creative.”
