A fan petition calling on Electronic Arts (EA) to save Mass Effect has passed 200,000 signatures following the closure of BioWare and cancellation of the next game in the sci-fi series.
A fan campaign to save Mass Effect has passed 200,000 signatures following Electronic Arts’ decision to close BioWare and cancel the next game in the long-running sci-fi series.
EA announced last Thursday (22.10.26) that BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, would be shut down as part of a wider restructuring of its games business.
The next Mass Effect game, which was first announced in 2020, has subsequently been cancelled after more than five years of development.
The project had been surrounded by uncertainty for some time.
BioWare downsized its development team last year, although EA said those cuts primarily affected staff who had worked on Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
The Mass Effect team continued working on the next game, with its director reassuring fans as recently as last year that development was still progressing.
Now fans are calling on EA to reverse course.
A Change.org petition created by user Joe Smith asks the publisher to commit to continuing development of Mass Effect with “proper funding, adequate staffing, and time allocation” to preserve the standards associated with the franchise.
It also asks EA to license the series to another developer if it is unwilling to continue making Mass Effect itself.
The petition reads: “Mass Effect holds a special place in the hearts of millions of players worldwide.”
It argues that the series’ “rich and immersive sci-fi universe” has captivated players for years, but claims declining resources and uncertainty surrounding the franchise have put its future at risk.
The petition’s rapid growth highlights the strength of the Mass Effect community, despite the series having been largely dormant since the release of Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017.
EA has said it will continue investing in major franchises including EA Sports titles, Apex Legends and Battlefield, while also supporting action-adventure projects such as the next Star Wars Jedi game and Marvel’s Iron Man.
However, the company’s restructuring has affected several other studios, including Skate developer Full Circle.
For now, there is no indication that EA plans to reconsider its decision.
But with more than 200,000 fans now demanding that Mass Effect continue, the series’ community is making its feelings about the cancellation extremely clear.
