Nicole Kidman has “pretty stable mental health” because she rarely uses her phone.
The 59-year-old Hollywood actress has admitted she’s often late when replying to texts and emails as she tries to limit the time she spends on her device and even bans it from her bedroom at night as she prefers to “meditate rather than doomscroll”.
In an interview with Vogue Australia, Nicole was asked questions by friends and colleagues including her Big Little Lies co-star Shailene Woodley, who said: “You are terrible on your phone, and I love this about you. What are you afforded in lieu of constantly being on a device?”
Nicole replied: “So is she! For me, yeah, I can be late with texting, I don’t check my emails all the time; I’m just not that person.
“But I’m able to be emotionally present in my life and have a pretty stable mental health because of it.
“I know that I need to go be in nature, I know how to realign myself when things get really overwhelming, and the phone, for me, is not the answer.
“I will choose to meditate rather than doomscroll – and I’ve doomscrolled, trust me. You have to have the discipline where you go: ‘Don’t do it’.”
Nicole added: “I never have the phone in the room at night. That means I’m not the number-one person responding on every group chat, and people can get upset because you’re like: ‘Oh sorry, I missed the text.’
“I’ve now learned the beauty of swiping and putting the blue dot back once you’ve read the text. Because then I’ll remember!”
The interview also included a question from another Big Little Lies castmember, Alexander Skarsgard, who took the opportunity to ask Nicole for some very practical advice.
He joked: “Hi Nicole. I’m in the market for a washing machine and a dryer. Would you recommend buying an integrated washer-dryer or two separate machines?”
Nicole replied: “Depends on the space. If you’ve got a small apartment, Alex, which I somehow feel you don’t [get integrated]. Otherwise, get separate.”
A more probing question came from singer Troye Sivan, who asked the actress how she manages to get enough rest when she’s so busy working.
The Oscar-winner replied: “I can lie on a bed and I can zone out. I think it’s because I’ve grown up on film sets where you have to learn how to wait.
“Sometimes you’re waiting on a set for four, five hours, and it’s probably some form of meditation, but I can literally just zone out and have minimal thoughts.
“It’s weird. And that’s rest in itself. My sleep is tough, because I travel a lot and I struggle with sleep … But I can sleep until five minutes before I leave.
“I don’t need an hour to have a coffee and wake up slowly. I can literally just jump out of bed. And I can wake up like that. [Snaps fingers.] You know how people press the snooze button? I’ve never pressed the snooze button, ever”.
