Olivia Colman found sex scenes with Alexander Skarsgard ‘less embarrassing’

Olivia Colman found her sex scenes with Alexander Skarsgard “less embarrassing” than she usually does.

The 52-year-old actress stars in the new film Wicker as The Fisherwoman and not only did she get on well with her co-star, the elaborate costume he wore as the Wicker Husband made their intimate moments seem less awkward.

She told Entertainment Weekly: “I do find sex scenes very embarrassing, and I didn’t in this because we got on so well and because there was humour to the sex scenes as well, which makes it less embarrassing.

“And [directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson] are married, and they would demonstrate. So it was like, okay, we’re all in this together. And it was a closed set.

“And also I suppose a little bit. I was less [embarrassed] because I was thinking this poor guy is wearing a basket and so let’s not get too embarrassed that there’s other things at play.”

Alexander, 50, noted he wasn’t as mobile as usual because of the “limitations” of his wicker costume.

He said: “The restriction of the costume would inform the sex scenes a little bit because again, we shot those scenes very early on. It was the first couple of days.

“So I was still figuring out the physicality and what the limitations were of wearing the suit. So there were certain things like in bed, you’re not super nimble, so it’s like, all right, maybe that didn’t quite work. Let’s do it this way instead, and then you figure out a way to make it work.”

Despite the appearance of Alexander’s costume, Olivia revealed it was actually very “soft”.

Her co-star explained: “It was made with a combination of organic materials and synthetic, and they had to weave it in a specific way considering how muscles and body parts would move.”

Meanwhile, Alexander recently recalled how he will “never forget” wearing the full costume on the set of the movie for the first time.

The Big Little Lies star told Variety: “If it doesn’t quite work, it looks like a horror film because it looks like you cut someone’s face off and glued it onto your own, and that wasn’t quite the tone we wanted to go for here.

“So, it was a lot of anticipation and excitement and a lot of nerves because it was like, ‘Oh s***! If it doesn’t work, then we’re kind of screwed.'”

Reflecting on his co-star’s response, the Succession actor added: “It was an incredible day that I’ll never forget. Putting it on and then it helped me find the physicality of the character and then stepping out of the trailer and having Olivia outside going (gasps).

“You can see how intricate and how beautiful the work was, and the fact that once it was glued on to my face, it actually moved with my movements. It’s even better than we imagined.”
