Borderlands 4 has pushed Gearbox Software’s looter-shooter franchise past 100 million copies sold worldwide, with more content planned for the series.
The Borderlands franchise has surpassed 100 million copies sold worldwide, with Gearbox Software confirming that Borderlands 4 has helped the long-running looter-shooter series reach the major milestone.
Gearbox celebrated the achievement in a new blog post while also looking ahead to the future of Borderlands 4 and the wider franchise.
Confirming that weekly activity refreshes and Community Challenges will continue, the developer said: “We just wrapped our Year 1 roadmap, and the team is cooking hard on more Borderlands 4 content for next year.”
The developer also teased a broader look at the franchise, suggesting that it is considering where the series could go next and listening to fans about which characters they would like to see return.
However, Gearbox stressed that fans should not expect a Borderlands 5 announcement imminently, with the studio saying it needs time to develop its future projects.
The developer said: “Big plans take time, and we need some room to work. You can trust that we’ll talk more when the time is right.”
The 100 million milestone had previously been predicted by Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford, who said last year that Borderlands 4 would eventually help the franchise reach the figure.
Pitchford said at the time: “We will break 100 million units with this launch, easily, all in, with the franchise.”
The series had sold 94 million copies by August 2025, meaning Borderlands 4 has now contributed at least six million sales to the franchise total.
However, Gearbox and publisher Take-Two Interactive have yet to reveal the game’s individual sales figures.
Borderlands 2 remains the best-selling entry, with 31 million copies sold, while Borderlands 3 has reached 23 million sales. Both titles have also benefited from significant discounts over the years, with Borderlands 3 previously available for just $3 on PC through Steam.
Borderlands 4 has endured a more difficult launch, with technical problems requiring multiple rounds of patches.
Its Switch 2 release was also delayed as Gearbox prioritised the PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.
Despite those challenges, the latest milestone confirms the enduring popularity of the Borderlands series, while Gearbox appears to be preparing its next chapter both for Borderlands 4 and the franchise as a whole.
