Adam Driver won’t return for Girls revival

Adam Driver won’t return for the Girls revival on HBO next year.

Adam Driver won’t return for the Girls revival.

The 42-year-old actor played Adam Sackler, the boyfriend of lead character Hannah Horvath (Lena Dunham), in the original series but Adam has insisted he has no plans to return for the new episodes.

When asked by Cinema Blend if he would be involved, Adam replied: “No, but I wish them the best of luck.”

Most of the original cast is returning for the new episodes – which will film in 2027 – including creator and star Lena Dunham, Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro and Andrew Rannells as Elijah Krantz.

The series will have a limited five-episode run on HBO.

Adam’s Hollywood career skyrocketed after Girls, with roles in three Star Wars movies, Marriage Story and The Meyerowitz Stories with Noah Baumbach, The Last Duel and House of Gucci for Ridley Scott and Ferrari for Michael Mann.

However, his lack of participation in the upcoming series does not come as a surprise after Dunham described their tumultuous relationship in her recent memoir Famesick.

She wrote: “He could be short-tempered and verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing. He could also be protective, loving even.”

Meanwhile, Dunham shared that she decided to bring back Girls after having a eureka moment in the shower.

The original show, which ended almost a decade ago after six seasons, followed a group of friends getting through life in their 20s in New York City.

Lena said in a statement: “We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell.

“I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day.

“Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop…”

With production set to get underway next year, Lena – who served as creator, showrunner and star for the original show – is excited to bring back the show “with the gift of hindsight”.

She added: “It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding.

“I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together… and the chance to wear yellow mesh…”
