Kathleen Marshall, whose dad Garry Marshall directed the first two Princess Diaries movies, has given an update on the upcoming third film.
The Princess Diaries 3 is “coming” with “an incredible team in place”.
Kathleen Marshall, the daughter of the films’ late director Garry Marshall, has revealed the team is working hard on the third movie in the series, and she’s “excited to be part of anything” related to the franchise.
She told PEOPLE magazine: “We’re working on Princess Diaries 3… It’s working out.”
She added that the hope is that the movie will be the “next thing” for Anne Hathaway, while Marshall has been exchanging email with Princess Diaries producer Debra Martin Chase “every once in a while”.
She promised: “We’re moving it along. I mean, there’s just an incredible team in place. So it’s coming. It’s coming.”
Meanwhile, Marshall is delighted to see Hathaway, 43, back in the new The Devil Wears Prada movie.
She said: “We’ve known her all these years. She’s wonderful. We can talk to her.
“I mean, she has started with us, with Garry, and we’re thrilled where she is right now. We can’t wait to see the new movie.”
Hathaway has been busy working on The Devil Wears Prada 2 and she’s confessed the sequel “took over” her plans to get the next Princess Diaries movie underway, but she is adamant she now wants to focus on getting the project greenlit.
She recently told Entertainment Weekly: “One hundred per cent, we’re constantly working on it. [The Devil Wears Prada 2] cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space … it became impossible to focus on both at the same time.”
Anne insisted the The Princess Diaries 3 is “not greenlit or confirmed yet” but they are “chipping away at the script” and she wants to move ahead with it, adding: “The intention is to make Princess Diaries hopefully next.”
She went on to say “If I learned anything from [Devil Wears Prada 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park.”
It comes two years after the project gained a director with Joyride’s Adele Lim signing up to helm the long-awaited third movie in the franchise.
Hathaway – who played Mia Thermopolis in the first two films alongside Dame Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse Renaldi – previously confirmed the plans in a post on Instagram.
She wrote: “Miracles happen. Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues.”
The first movie was released in 2001, with the sequel – The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement – following in 2004. Debra Martin Chase, who originated the film franchise, will produce the third film alongside Anne under her Somewhere Pictures banner.
Flora Greeson is writing the script, which is expected to continue the story from the first two movies rather than rebooting the franchise. Anne is expected to reprise her role but it’s not known if Julie Andrews, 90, will return for the third film.
