Carol Burnett has shared details about her childhood in Los Angeles.
Carol Burnett “used to climb the Hollywood sign” as a child.
The 93-year-old actress grew up in Los Angeles, and she’s admitted to being a little unruly during her younger years.
The movie star – who grew up just north of Hollywood Boulevard – told People: “The neighbourhood kids, we used to climb the Hollywood sign. It’s a wonder we didn’t break our necks.”
Carol enjoyed a simple life during her younger years, and she recalled climbing the Hollywood sign as a fun way to pass the time.
She said: “We would be flying a kite or roller skating or something. The Os were my favourite!”
Carol didn’t grow up in a rich family, and she remembers going to watch second-run films with her grandma because they were more affordable.
She shared: “We very seldom went to a first-run because we didn’t have the money. But the second runs, there would be double features. And it would be before I was 12, it was like a dime or 11 cents for me and a quarter for my grandmother. So we could afford that.”
Carol previously admitted that she just wanted to “go to the movies” as a child.
The veteran actress revealed that she’s always been fascinated with the film industry.
She told Interview magazine: “My grandmother used to schlepp me around Hollywood Boulevard. All I wanted to do was go to the movies.”
Asked why she was raised by her grandmother, Carol explained: “My mother moved out here. She wanted to be a writer. She and my father were separated on and off. They left me with my grandmother in Texas. Then we moved out here to join my mother and they were separated.
“I just stayed with my grandmother. We lived in an apartment building in Hollywood. My mother lived across the hall. My dad was an alcoholic. Then my mother became one. They both died when they were 46.”
